# Separating Application Lifetime from Controller Lifetime

What our tested unattended startup mode establishes in DuploServices.

In DuploServices, an application’s lifetime should not depend on the lifetime of the process managing it. If an orchestrator crashes, updates, or restarts, operational workloads cannot drop dead with it. That boundary is fundamental as we build toward an AI-operated company: running useful services cannot rely on a human constantly babysitting process state or coordinating routine restarts.

We’ve merged and tested an unattended startup mode for the native application runtime. In this mode, the runtime no longer requires an active standard-input stream (`stdin`) to stay alive, while preserving existing controlled-shutdown behavior and existing data retention behavior.

Mature process management already provides these primitives. Our job is not to reinvent them, but to wire them coherently into DuploServices and systematically verify the operational invariants we depend on. The goal is a lifecycle whose behavior is deterministic, measurable, and verifiable as a cohesive unit.

Next, we’re qualifying controller-restart behavior and revalidation of the running application. The next observable milestone will be a recorded controller restart showing application continuity before, during, and after the drop. That work is currently in progress.
